How to Utilize the Internet to Make Money

Many are in doubt as to the possibility of
making money on the Internet. This is because
some people have fallen victim to fraudsters
who use fake identities to deceive people with
promises of quick cash to be made.
However, experts say there are legitimate ways
of making money online.

Speaking recently at the Nigeria Online
Marketing Guru Summit in Lagos, the Chief
Executive Officer, Cherry Brooks, Mr. David
Olumuyiwa, says the daily routine of working
from dawn to dusk will soon be a thing of the
past because digital jobs that offer flexible
working hours are gradually taking over the
world of work.
He said, “The paradigm has shifted. It is no
longer the 8am to 5pm routine to earn a salary.
People can earn a living in the confines of their
homes. There are opportunities to make
money on the Internet more than before. It is
possible to make money online although there
are challenges to be overcome.”
Moreover, experts say most people believe
that money is made easily online with just a
click of the mouse, forgetting the money can
only be earned through hard work.
Olumuyiwa says that in the same way that
every job is done either in the formal sector or
in the informal sector, online jobs should be
treated in like manner with dedication and
commitment.
Features of online business
Content is key
He says, “Content is your currency in the digital
age. If you want to make money online, then
you must have an engaging content. To be able
to make money from the Internet, you must
have digital skills. You must have enough ideas
that you will sell to people.
There are people with laptops and
smartphones with access to the Internet and
yet they are still begging people for money on
the pretext that they don’t have a job.
Huge money-making options
Some people have innate skills like the ability
to write, draw, sing, do voice over and sell.
There are several options of businesses to pick
from.
Level playing field
Cherry brooks CEO says that there is a level
playing field and no discrimination against age,
nationality as long as the professional is able to
deliver results.
However, he cautions people against engaging
in fraudulent or irresponsible activities because
such information can easily pop up on the
Internet.
He says, “The Internet never forgives or forgets
because of digital footprints. People’s identity
cannot be masked. Be careful of what you do.
Don’t defraud but engage in smart business.”
Access to affordable expert training
Olumuyiwa says that most of the information
and training offered for a fee in most training
institutes are offered for free on Youtube. He
enjoined online money makers to develop their
skills with free videos on Youtube.
Reasons why people don’t make money online
Wrong mindset and attitude: Olumuyiwa says
people consider Internet business as money-
making venture without attaching much
importance to it. He says such people don’t
have business cards, a business name, a
business plan and have not even made an
attempt to register the business.
No personal swot analysis: As with every start-
up, Olumuyiwa says that the strengths,
weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of every
online business should be evaluated before
investing in it. According to him, people who
forget to do this, make mistakes and lose
money.
Other reasons for losses in online business as
highlighted by Olumuyiwa are the absence of
thorough training in a niche, lack of strategic
direction, inadequate marketing and lack of
mentorship
Opportunities in digital marketing
Digital marketing has become a profession for
many who have discovered its disruptive
ability. Experts say the digital marketing
strategies have been able to attract clients and
retain customers for businesses that
understand its usefulness.
With the use of SMS marketing, email
marketing as well as strong content, digital
marketers drive customer growth.
According to experts, these professional digital
marketers use social media to build
relationships with customers and potential
clients.
The Co-founder/Chairman, Social Media Week,
Lagos, Obi Asika, advises participants that the
successful sales and connection with audience
in the digital space lies in the ability to tell a
story.
He adds, “You need education and skills to be
able to disrupt. Whether you are a comedian or
a Master of Ceremony, you need a mentor and
a management team. The power social media is
emotions, content and authentic information.”
While highlighting the advantages of digital
marketing over the classic marketing, Asika
explains that digital marketing is simpler and
easier with the use of direct responses and
short answers during the communication
process.
According to him, digital marketing is
supervised by almost all the stakeholders like
the customer protection agency, competitors,
platform operators and the users unlike the
classic marketing.
Marketing on Facebook
The CEO, Tradersball, Daniel Malik, explains
that businesses with a Facebook page need to
create content that will attract clicks and likes.
According to him, great content will increase
the page’s affinity with the fans who value the
content and click on it and when they click on
it, Facebook will rank it as popular.
He says, “As an example, if you post status
updates to your Facebook business page and
your fans regularly comment, share, or like on
your posts – referred to as “the Edge,” they
have high ‘Affinity’ and are more likely to see
updates from your page. Alternatively, fans
with little or no interaction see less of your
status updates due to their low Affinity score.
“Importantly, affinity is measured by frequency
of your fans interaction with your business
page and not the frequency of your interaction
with your fans. You can basically think of an
edge as a post. So every time you post
something new on Facebook, you create a new
edge.”
