The two Chambers of the National Assembly were yesterday shutdown for the rebranding conference of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) holding today in Abuja, our correspondents report.
The Upper Chamber announced the adjournment of sitting to Tuesday, after a closed door session presided over by the Senate President Bukola Saraki.
It was gathered that the senators in the closed session agreed to adjourn sitting to next week to enable PDP Senators attend the conference organised to lay a foundation for the resurrection of the party.
“It was agreed that we adjourn to next Tuesday because there is no way we can form quorum tomorrow (today) because the PDP Senators are not going to be around. Also, another set of senators are going to Plateau to condole the family of late Pwajok,” a senator said.
But in an interview, the spokesperson of the Senate, Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi said they adjourned in honour of late clerk to the senate, Mr. Adedotun Durojaiye who died on Friday after a protracted illness.
Our correspondent recalled that the Senate had on Tuesday suspended its sitting when a motion was raised by the Senate leader, Ali Ndume on Durojaiye’s death.
Meanwhile, the House of Representatives also adjourned plenary to Tuesday to allow its PDP member attend their party’s ongoing rebranding conference.
Although there was no official confirmation to that effect, it was gathered that the House leadership took the decision in solidarity with the PDP lawmakers.
Our correspondent reports that during the last 7th Assembly, the House under former speaker and now Sokoto State governor, Aminu Tambuwal had adjourned plenary on several occasions in order to allow members of various political parties participate in their parties’ events, the last one being the registration exercise embarked nationwide by the then opposition APC sometime last year.
