Sony's James Bond Movie 'Spectre' Tops Box Office With $73 Million

The latest Bond film, Spectre, has been put under a lot of pressure to do better than previous Bond film Skyfall in terms of the box office.
The James Bond franchise saw its second-highest opening ever this weekend with "Spectre", pulling in $73 million to dominate the box office. Craig and director Sam Mendes, neither of whom has had another movie release since Skyfall in 2012, now have two Bond debuts open above $70 million, helping to see the franchise grow financially, well outpacing ticket price inflation.

Though early estimates aren't shabby, Spectre did fail to top the record-breaking standard set by Skyfall, which debuted to $88.4 million in 2012.
China, where "Skyfall" took in US$59.2 million, could be the difference maker. "When you look at the global piece, it's absolutely extraordinary", Sony's global distribution chief, Rory Bruer, told Variety.
The Peanuts Movie provided a family-friendly alternative to James Bond's guns and martinis, taking second place with a strong US$45 million.
"It's still a great number", said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Rentrak. That is good news, going into the holiday season. At $35 million to make, the film broke even here, but worldwide proved a whopping success with over $180 million taken in. The young adult adventure film opened in the People's Republic, picking up US$19.8 million for the weekend.
As far as The Last Witch Hunter goes, I think Vin Diesel is thinking less about a sequel and more about finding ways to do insane stunts with cars and saying "I am Groot" thirty different ways.
Goosebumps starring Jack Black and Bridge Of Spies starring Tom Hanks rounded out the top five movies. Trumbo, starring Bryan Cranston, took in US$77,229 from five cinemas. It's also kind of fitting that the two studios that help sustain the box office during its recent drought are the same runs providing the resources for it to again thrive.Spectre has a clear road ahead as the next blockbuster, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2, won't be out until November 20.
In total in the six released territories, the film has taken in $80.4 million, including $67.7 million from SPRI territories and $12.7 million from territories in which MGM is distributing.
