Nigeria requires 58 years to eradicate illiteracy — UNESCO

The United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation, has said that over 62 million Nigerians are illiterates, a situation it described as dangerous to the development of the country.

UNESCO also said it would take Nigeria another 58 years to completely eradicate illiteracy, even with innovations like Information and Communications Technology and other learning mechanisms.

Three governors of Oyo, Lagos and Osun and other prominent personalities paid their last respect to the matriarch of the Awolowo family, Late Hannah Idowu Dideolu Awolowo at her lying-in-state at Tribune House in Ibadan, Oyo state capital.
Governor Abiola Ajimobi and his wife who were the host were joined by Governors Ruaf Aregbesola,  Akinwumi Ambode and their wives to mourn the deceased.

Nigerian senators shun Facebook training

Senators on Monday shunned the training organised ‎on the use of Facebook and other social media for effective communication on issues relating to Public Policy and Good Governance.

The training, which started by 12 noon, had only 25 participants in attendance. The Senate has 109 members.

Buhari explains reason for delay in forming cabinet

President Muhammadu Buhari says the delay in forming his cabinet was due to the inadequacy of the handover notes he received from his predecessor, Goodluck Jonathan.

Buhari said this in Abuja on Monday at a conference on "Strengthening Nigeria's Transition Frameworks for Democratic Consolidation", organised by the National Democratic Institute (NDI).

Jonathan, PDP Were not Mentally Prepared for Defeat – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has said former president, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan and the Peoples Democratic Party were not mentally prepared for the defeat they suffered during the 2015 elections.

Represented at the event by the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, Buhari said as a result of lack of mental preparedness, the government of Jonathan could not put the structures necessary for transition in place and this nearly led to a national crisis.

Senate Will Reveal 2016 Budget Details - Saraki

Senate President Bukola Saraki on Sunday said the national assembly reveal details of the 2016 budget to the pubic.

Saraki said the development was in fulfillment of his inaugural promise and part of efforts to satisfy the curiosity of some Nigerians who had been clamouring that the budget should be made public. “By the time we come into the 2016 budget, at the end of the year, it will be clearer because people will see one item line,” read a statement issued on his behalf by Bamikole Omishore, one of his media aides.
