Two –time African champions Enyimba FC have claimed the Nigeria Professional Football League title for the 7th time, following a 0-0 draw with second –placed Warri Wolves in a top-of-the-table encounter in Aba on Sunday.
The People’s Elephant, on 68 points, started the game needing only one point from their last two matches to be assured of the crown, which they had won six times previously. Wolves, on 62, needed to win the last two games and hope Enyimba capitulate uncharacteristically, to hope for glory.
Enyimba last won the NPFL in 2010.
In the event, both teams played out a fitting, if tepid, scoreless draw at the Enyimba International Stadium. The Aba giants moved to an unassailable 69 points to set a new Nigeria record of seven for League triumphs, surpassing Enugu Rangers’ six.
Giwa FC pipped Shooting Stars of Ibadan to stick firmly to third place, only edged on goals difference by second –placed Wolves. Wikki Tourists lost at El-Kanemi Warriors, but Sunshine Stars enhanced their chances of a continental ticket by winning at Bayelsa United.
The last matches of the season take place on Sunday, 15th November, with champions Enyimba away to Sunshine Stars at Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos.
Enyimba will thus challenge for the CAF Champions League title, which it won consecutively in 2003 and 2004, come next year.
